Employability

To make sure that students go on to live independent lives after college, we do everything we can to prepare them for working life while they’re here.

Work experience is available to everyone, and it’s tailored to individual needs and aspirations. There are fantastic opportunities on campus, as well as plenty of openings in the many local businesses we have links with.

Work experience on campus

Here on campus, students can experience what it’s like to work in the:

  • student common room
  • fundraising department
  • IT department
  • reception
  • the HR department
  • the finance department
  • Sure Start centre
  • dining room and kitchen.

Work experience in the community

We have links with 40 local employers, which means that students can get a feel for what it’s like to work in a range of industries and environments outside college. These include:

  • garden centres
  • cafes
  • pubs and restaurants
  • charity shops
  • kennels and animal rescue centres
  • hairdressers
  • leisure centres
  • the local cinema
  • farms and small holdings
  • local garages
  • schools and nurseries.

Developing enterprise skills

We also encourage students wherever possible to get involved in projects that develop their numeracy and communication skills and prepare them for the workplace. These include growing and selling produce from our farm, creating and auctioning their own art, or getting involved in fundraising activities on behalf of other charities.
